Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma mentioned that, NMDC is likely to get a full time chairman by the end of year 2013.
NMDC, the largest domestic Iron ore mining firm has no full time chairman from past 23 months. Rana Som, the ex chairman was retired on 31 Dec, 2013 and since then, the firm is operated by Mr C S Verma, chairman of SAIL on a temporary basis.
“I assure you NMDC will get a full time CEO before December- end. The (appointment) process is on, let the vigilance clearance come (for the selected person),”said Verma at the India International Trade Fair. He was there to inaugurate the Steel Pavilion.
A continuous effort from the company for having a full time chairman and a managing director has been pointless. M S Rana, a candidate selected by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) did not get vigilance clearance for very long period. Also, the panel for selection of the chairman was scrapped by the Steel Ministry, which is the parent department of the company.
A set of panel, headed by the Planning Commission Member Arun Maira, was set for the second time. In May, this panel had also recommended names of Narendra Kothari, CEO of SAIL Burnpur plant and T K Lahiry, CMD of Bharat Coking Coal Limited. The vigilance clearance of these two names is not yet declared.
The steel Minister said in this context that, he has not have any issues with the panel selected by the Maira Committee. He is himself waiting for the vigilance clearance decision.
The Steel Ministry will soon appoint another officiating head for NMDC. They are in plans to replace SAIL chairman, from the post of CEO at NMDC, as he wants to focus in his own company. Ministry has recommended the name of Syedin Abbasi, Joint Secretary in the Ministry, as new interim head of the company. The recommendations were given to the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet.
If appointed, Abbasi will be the third interim head of NMDC. Ever since Rana Som’s retirement, N K Nanda, Technical Director, NMDC and SAIL Chairman, C S Verma had been appointed as its official head in temporary basis.
