The B K Mohanty mines situated at Uribulu iron ore mines in Barbil has been served a Rs 57 crore penalty notice for allegedly violating forest regulations and indulging in illegal mining. The Deputy Director of Mines, Joda Mining Circle has served the notice along with a showcase notice.
The violation was come to notice during a joint inspection conducted by the Joda DDM, Barbil Tahasildar and Barbil Forest Range Officer in 2012 June. The Team had found that the area where mining operations were carried out did not belong to the area leased out to B K Mohanty.
The mining was instead being done by shifting the boundary pillars to adjacent Uliburu reserve forest. Mohanty, which has 56 hectare (ha) iron ore lease at Uribulu in Joda mineral circle, is accused of illegally raising and exporting iron ore worth Rs 1,800 crore until 2009.
The DDM, Joda had issued the penalty and Show cause notice letter no.10222on on the 1st September 2012 under the MMDR act section 21(5). The forest department has also learnt to have sent a separate notice.
State mines minister Rajnikant Singh said, the department has all the details of the irregularities done by the miners.The Shah Commission had also raised questions about the activities of the B.K.Mohanty mines.
