Yet another technical innovation of Tata Steel, the company had planned to launch a new value added product “Ground Granulated BF Slag” (GGBS) for construction industry.
Newly launched GGBS has been commonly used in developed countries since years and now also used in major Indian construction projects.
Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is a by-product from the blast-furnaces used to make iron.
‘Slag is a blend of several oxides; it contains impurities separated out from Iron ore. It can be treated after coming out of BF. Slag is poured in a stream of water which cools it. Water is then filtered to obtain slag granules. Slag is then ground to required size to obtain GBBS. It can also be referred as slag cement’
GGBS is used to make Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC). It is combined with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in ratio ranging from 30:70 to 70:30. In the production of ready-mixed concrete, GGBS replaces a substantial portion of the normal Portland cement content, generally about 50%, but sometimes up to 70%. The higher the proportion, the better is the durability. The disadvantage of the higher replacement level is that early-age strength development is somewhat slower.
To introduce the product with fraternity, an interactive session was organized on 11 Dec, 2013. Builders, contractors and architects of Jamshedpur attended the session. Sandeep Kumar, EIC (Secondary Products), Tata Steel, assured to come up with better products at competitive prices. The company is planning for trial supplies within a month. However, commercial launch can be expected in some couple of months based on market response. Meanwhile, product will be introduced in major cities like Kolkata, Ranchi and Bhubaneshwar.
