Over the years, demand for wire rod has seen an upside owing to an increase in usage in the industrial and household products. Wire Rod 5.5 mm market in the last few months has been very volatile due to higher raw material prices, labor issues in Raipur, production cut and low demand.
In Raipur and Durgapur, Wire Rod prices have gone up by Rs 2,300-2,800/MT in last one week as on August 30, 2013. Presently in Raipur, 5.5 MM is traded at Rs 40,100/MT and in Durgapur the same is offered at Rs 38,200/MT.
“Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) will soon commission its wire rod mill at IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur” said S.M. Mohanthy, Director at SAIL. SAIL has also set its target for the Current fiscal of increasing its sale by selling 1 MnT of steel through its dealership schemes, he further added.

Wire Rod is majorly produced in Central and Eastern India and being supplied PAN India for revalue addition to small scattered industry. SAIL – Bhilai Steel Plant, commissioned its 400,000 MT per annum Wire Rod Mill in 1967 and later upgraded it. Tata Steel’s 300,000 MT pa Wire Rod Mill became operational in March, 1987. RINL’s Vizag Steel Plant has a modern Wire Rod Mill of 850,000 MT pa capacity. Besides the above main players there are secondary manufacturers who are producing high quality Wire Rods such as Adhunik, Hira, Usha Martin, Bhusan etc.
Wire product uses
Wire Rod is used in manufacturing of balls, rollers, spares, ancillaries etc. it is also used in producing cables and conductors for the Power sector. ACSR wires, Detonator wire and Single and stranded wire are used in overhead power transmission lines and for explosives for mines. Galvanized wire, armoured wire and electrode quality wires are used in power sectors, armouring of submarine cables, for manufacturing of electrode, for barbing and fencing telephone and in railway track signals. Wire is also used in spring industry to manufacture spring in general, tiller springs, galvanized spring and spring for auto industry.
Growth of wire rod industry is directly linked with the growth of infrastructure, automobile and power sectors. Wire rod industry has potential to grow at a much higher rate than the current rate of 7% to 8% per annum.
