The Indian Railways has generated Rs 29,690.2 crore revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic between 1st April to 31st July 2013. It generated a total of Rs 27,515.9 crore in the corresponding period last year, thereby witnessing an increase of 7.9%.
The Indian Railways has carried 343 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during April-July 2013. It carried 327 million tonnes last year, thereby witnessing an increase of 4.89% in the freight traffic.
Out of the total earnings of Rs 6,894.6 crore gathered from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of July 2013, Rs 3,023.6 crore was churned out from transportation of 42.3 million tonnes of Coal, which was followed by earning of Rs 625.9 crore from transportation of 9.9 million tonnes of Iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
Earnings of Rs 564.4 crore came from transportation of 7.9 million tonnes of Cement, Rs 539.6 crore from transportation of 4.3 million tonnes of food grains, Rs 447.4 crore from transportation of 3.8 million tonnes of Petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 413.2 crore from transportation of 3 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 369.5 crore from transportation of 4 million tonnes of Fertilizers, Rs 112.1 crore from transportation of 1.3 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except Iron ore, Rs 373.2 crore from transportation of 3.6 million tonnes by container service and Rs 425.2 crore from transportation of 5.5 million tonnes of other goods.
