National Miner Development Corporation Limited (NMDC), one of India’s largest Iron Ore producer and exporter, with its mines located in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, is a state-controlled mineral producer of the Government of India. NMDC is fully controlled by the steel ministry and owned by the Government.
NMDC does not have a permanent Chief Managing Director (CMD) since a long time. In July last year, Steel Minister, Beni Prasad Verma did not agree to the recommendation of Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) for appointing M.S.Rana, the head of Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India, as the CMD of NMDC. Instead, he gave the charge to N.K.Nanda, the Chairman and senior most Director of NMDC. Then due to some issues with Nanda, the charge was given to C.S.Verma, the chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) for a short time duration.
According to the sources, now, S.K.Tripathi, the Chairman and managing Director of Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited (MSTC), a Mini Ratna Category-1 PSU, is likely to get the charge for the post of CMD at NMDC for a temporary time period. Tripathi will be the interim head of NMDC until the Steel Ministry brings a permanent CMD for it. Tripathi would be replacing Verma on an interim basis after final approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
SAIL Chairman Verma is also in charge of International Coal Venture Ltd (ICVL) and has been the interim head of NMDC since May, 2012. “Now, Steel Ministry has decided to give Verma more time to concentrate on SAIL where he is holding the highest post and has recommended Tripathi’s name to Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for giving him additional charge of NMDC,” said a source from the Ministry. “Since, Verma is busy with SAIL and also burdened with the task of heading ICVL; we thought it to be prudent to allow him to spend more time on SAIL. The steel sector is also passing through a bad time. He needs more time,” the source further added.
Steel Ministry appointing panel, head by Planning Commission member Arun Maira, had organized an interview for the post of a full-time CMD at NMDC on May 30, 2013, in which 15 candidates had arrived. Tripathi was one among them, along with the recommended names of SAIL’s Burnpur plant CEO, Narendra Kothari and Bharat Coking Coal’s CMD Tapas Kumar Lahiri.
However, S.K.Tripathi has not yet joined as the approval from ACC is still being awaited for its final decision.
